Time is running out on Round 2 of public consultation for Kootenay Lake Ferry System said ministry staff in a media release Tuesday.

Deadline for feedback is Friday, March 30.

“Your feedback is important to us. Input received through this public consultation will be compiled and considered by the Ministry, along with technical, environmental and financial considerations, in refining and finalizing the improvements to the Kootenay Lake Ferry and Balfour Ferry Terminal area,” said ministry staff.

“Following the end of the consultation period, feedback will be compiled and summarized in a Consultation Summary Report which will be posted online.”

Friday, March 30, is the last day to submit your feedback on the proposed improvements to the Kootenay Lake Ferry and Balfour Ferry Terminal area. Consultation materials, including the Discussion Guide and online Feedback Form are available at gov.bc.ca/balfourterminal.

Starting Sunday, the temporary changes to service began with the MV Balfour put into service while the MV Osprey is refitted.

Vehicle capacity is reduced to 28 forcing potential wait times to increase during busy sailings.

This change runs from March 25 to April 7.

The province said depending on water levels in the West Arm of Kootenay Lake and the time it takes to refit the MV Osprey, the boat maybe returned to service early.

Beginning April 8 to April 21, there will be a reduced weight load for the MV Osprey depending on the number and weights of commercial traffic boarding the vessel causing sailing waits for some vehicles.

Before taking the Kootenay Lake Ferry, drivers should:

  • Go to Drive BC’s updates for the Kootenay Lake Ferry to check for potential sailing waits
  • Check the overhead messaging boards in Nelson and Creston
  • Plan to arrive early for the ferry
  • Allow time for a potential sailing wait
  • Consider off-peak crossing times or an alternate route.
  • Help spread the word to your friends and family about these changes
