Former World Champion Rick Folk is heading back to the Brier. Only this time he’s going back as a coach.

The Jim Cotter rink, which includes Folk’s son Kevin, defeated Neil Dangerfield of Victoria 6-4 in the final of the Canadian Direct Insurance B.C. Men’s Curling Final Sunday at the Vernon Curling Club.

Cotter & Company now represent B.C. at the Tim Horton’s Brier March 5-13 at the John Labatt Centre in London, Ont.

The Vernon/Kelowna rink had gone unbeaten in the 10-team round robin at 9-0, but lost the Page 1-2 game to Dangerfield, 5-4.

That meant he needed to beat the winner of the Page 3-4 game, defending champion Jeff Richard, to advance to a rematch.  That he did, 8-4 to set up the showdown.

In the final Cotter, third Ken Maskiewich, second Kevin Folk and lead Rick Sawatsky tied the game at 3-3 in the fourth before stealing a single point in the fifth end.

After the sixth end was blanked, Cotter stole another single in the seventh to lead 5-3. The rinks exchanged points in the next two ends before Cotter ran Dangerfield out of rocks in the tenth.

The Tom Buchy rink of Kimberley, the only Kootenay rep in the 10-team field, finished with a 3-6 record.

Fred Thomson and Rob Nobert of the Nelson Curling Club are the last Nelsonites to represent the city at the Brier. The two were part of the Deane Horning rink that played at the Brier in 2005 at the Rexall Place in Edmonton.
