Here’s what’s happening at The Royal on Baker for the week of March 21 …

Canucks Game on the Big Screen

Tuesday, March 29, starts at 5 p.m.

Join in for dinner and drinks and watch the Canucks take on the Predators on the huge and beautiful big screen. Magic Bus to follow.

• Magic Bus with All Night Vinyl

Starts at 10 p.m.

A DJ Smash Up every Tuesday. And no cover.

Electric Wednesday with Estevan and Tracy Lynn

Wednesday, March 30, starts at 8:30 pm

Always a good group of local talent to enjoy. Enjoy a drink and watch some of Nelson’s finest take the stage.

Gemma Luna

Thursday, March 31, $8 advance/$10 day of show, starts at 9 pm

Gemma Luna returns to the Royal for an evening of sweet, soul soothing jazzy sounds.

Born in Kingston, New York, she started singing at age five, playing guitar at fifteen, and picked up the flute and piano along the way as her family moved into Canada and westward.

Over the years Gemma Luna has honed her musical craft at festivals, clubs and cafés. She has collaborated with many musicians of varying styles on projects ranging from folk, gypsy trance, hip hop, world fusion and electronica.

Opening set by Jimmy Lewis.

Tickets available in advance at Royal Espresso.

Bastet

Friday, April 1, show time 10 pm

Bastet brings her sonic adventures to the Royal.

In the last year, Bastet has pushed bins from blissfully packed west coast festivals to a club night overseas alongside heavyweights including Vaski, Reid Speed and Nero.

While not refining her art in the studio, she can be found somewhere in the murky early hours pushing complex blends of monstrous low-end and intricate, genre defying sound with meticulous technique, laying down mind altering crunk adventures well into the morning after.

A sonic beauty…don’t miss her.

Circle the Wagons (reunion show)

Saturday, April 2, $10, show time 9 pm

Circle the Wagons are reuniting at the Royal for their first show in five years.

Circle the Wagons has often been referred to as “the world’s greatest band” (mostly by it’s own members).

CTW is a bunch of pissed off old bastards who refuse to fit in or wear skinny jeans. They are loud, fast, snotty, sarcastic and ridiculously good-looking. Do yourself a favour and experience the “world’s greatest band.”

These guys play fast, heavy, old school punk. Local all-girl opening act, the Cheddar Bunnies and Vancouver punks, The Blisterin’ Barnacles, will start the night off.

It’s going to be a great night of punk, hardcore and simply awesome uneasy listening music.

Christina Martin

Sunday, April 3, $10, show time 8 pm

For nearly a decade Martin has been on an extensive musical journey.

From recording her debut album Pretty Things (2002) in Austin, Texas, to opening for Wilco, it was clear that music was her path.

Her album, Two Hearts (2008) has won her Pop Recording of the year at the 2009 East Coast Music Awards, and she has also picked up two Nova Scotia Music Awards for Female Artist of the Year and Pop Recording of the Year in 2008.

Martin can hold her own on stage, whether it’s in a living room, a train car or in a stadium, she connects deeply with her audience.

With a voice that elicits Sheryl Crow and Lucinda Williams comparisons, she takes listeners into the caverns of their hearts, examining both the light and darkness.

Whether she’s softly serenading with an acoustic number; or perfecting her rock n’ roll swagger, Martin is at home in the spotlight.

Check out the voice, the music and the songwriting of Christina Martin.

Tickets are available online at www.liveattheroyal.com or Royal Espresso.
