CBT launches youth writing contest

Columbia Basin Trust (CBT) is challenging youth ages 15-29 to submit works of fiction with appealing characters, dynamic plots and magnificent style to its first ever SCRATCH Writing Challenge - just make sure your story takes place
somewhere in the Columbia Basin.

The SCRATCH Writing Challenge is an opportunity for youth to take part in a creative writing experience that could lead to their work being published in a special Summer 2010 edition of CBT's SCRATCH Magazine, as well as a grand prize of $1,000.

"This writing challenge will be a tremendous opportunity for youth who love to write, to have the chance to be published in SCRATCH Magazine and to have their story read by people across the Columbia Basin," said Michelle d'Entremont, CBT Basin Youth Liaison. "SCRATCH Magazine was created by youth to share their photos, poetry and ideas with each other. It is usually published twice a year so we are really excited to publish an extra edition featuring the ten finalists from the challenge."

The Challenge asks young writers to submit a 3,000-5,000-word, fictional story that has not been previously published and submit it by March 31, 2010. For writers who may want help with story development, rewriting, editing and endings, CBT has partnered with writing students from Selkirk College and College of the Rockies who will be hosting workshops in January to help participants with their creative writing submissions.

Submissions will be narrowed down to ten finalists by a selection committee of published authors, instructors, a library representative and a CBT Basin Youth Liaison. All ten finalists will be guaranteed to appear in the special Summer 2010 edition of SCRATCH Magazine and will be in the running for the Readers' Choice Award which will be awarded to the one story that receives the most votes online.

Along with being published, a grand prize of $1,000 and a runner-up prize of $500 will be awarded, and each of the remaining ten finalists will receive a $100 gift certificate to their favourite Basin book store. The winner of the Readers' Choice Award will receive a $300 gift certificate to their favourite book store as well.
