Cathedral of Mary Immaculate in Nelson vandalized

Nelson joined the list of communities in Canada, on a smaller scale, having local churches vandalized following the discovery of unmarked burial sites of children’s remains at former residential schools in Canada.

On the eve of Canada Day, the Cathedral of Mary Immaculate at the corner of Mill and Ward Streets in Nelson was vandalized when perpetrators tossed orange paint on the steps, doors and windows.

Vandal also strapped signs saying “Every Child Matters” and “No Pride in Genocide — #CANCELCANNDADAY” on the railings of the church handicap ramp.

Nelson Police is aware of the incident and is investigating the vandalism.

Since the discovery of unmarked burial sites adjacent the former residential school in Kamloops, several churches have been set on fire.

The latest happening at the St. Patrick Co-Cathedral in Yellowknife that happened after midnight Thursday.

The building sustained minor damage, with no injuries.

Wednesday, the Roman Catholic Church 30 minutes outside Edmonton, in Morinville, Alta, was burnt to the ground by the fire.

The fire happened several hours following news of 182 sets of remains in unmarked graves found near a former residential school near Cranbrook.

There have been a series of church fires since the discovery of 215 unmarked graves near Kamloops and 751 flagged on the Cowessess First Nation in Saskatchewan.

Many in the indigenous community blame the Catholic Church for not apologizing for the damage caused by residential schools.

Orange paint was tossed onto the front door and noticeboard of Cathedral of Mary Immaculate overnight.
