The parking lot outside the Nelson and District Community Complex won’t be the overflow lot for the City of Nelson commuters after the Regional District of Central Kootenay Board recently approved bylaw enforcement on the rec facility land.

Board members rubber stamped a service agreement between the RDCK and the City of Nelson to monitor the NDCC parking lot.

Effective December 1, 2020, the NDCC lot will be enforced by the City of Nelson bylaw officers as a two-hour parking zone, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with offenders subject to ticketing and/or potential towing.

“We do not want to ticket our community members; however, we need to create accessible options for our diverse community to park within reach of the facility to allow access for those with mobility issues, large equipment and young children to reach us safely,” said Marty Benson, Manager of Recreation, NDCC in a media release Tuesday.

“We have heard from our community members how important this issue is for everyone.”

The RDCK said the agreement was reached after in depth research was conducted to monitor, evaluate and consider options to address the negative impact of unauthorized parking at the NDCC parking lot.

The RDCK said parking capacity has been an ongoing challenge for residents in the area attempting to access services at the NDCC due to non-enforcement.

“The goal is to create more parking opportunities for NDCC users, while supporting an effective approach to parking enforcement that is consistent with other areas throughout the City of Nelson,” the RDCK media release said.

The RDCK said bylaw enforcement will begin with an “education” program during the month of December.

“Vehicles will be monitored by enforcement officers and warnings for “failing to comply” will be issued to ensure the community is provided with adequate time to adjust to the changes,” the RDCK said.

“We encourage everyone to work together with us to support appropriate parking lot usage,” Benson said.
