It was a survival of the fittest for the L.V. Rogers Bombers.

Sarah Fuhr scored 19 points and Kiandra McLaren added 16 as shorthanded LVR outlasted the Fernie Falcons in the final of the Bomber Classic High School Girl’s Basketball Tournament Saturday at the Hangar.

LVR, entering the season with only nine players, played the game with six with three reserves sitting on the bench with injury. Guards Brittany Wheeler and Jessica Carmichael and forward Samantha Einarson all sat out the final.

“I was just happy to get through the game without anyone else getting hurt,” said Bomber coach Bruce Fuhr. “When players are seeing that many minutes, fatigue can set in and injuries can result.”

“I just hope we can get a few of our injured players back for the (league) game in Trail (against Crowe Hawks) Tuesday,” he added.

LVR did not have the greatest start in the championship contest as the squad missed numerous easy shots inside. The miscues allowed the tenacious Falcons to grab an 11-10 after one quarter.

In the second, the Bombers finally got its up-tempo game in gear out scoring Fernie 18-8 led by Fuhr, who had eight assist in the game, with eight points. LVR opened the quarter on an 11-0 run, sparked by a two-one-two zone press.

In the second half McLaren got into the act offensively scoring 12 points to lead LVR offensively.

Rachel Moulson had 12 rebounds with Emily Klapstein had seven boards.

“Kiandra was one of our better players this weekend,” said Fuhr. “She really ran the floor well and took the ball to the hoop with aggression throughout the tournament.”

LVR opened the tournament Friday by pounding the Prince Charles Comets of Creston 54-21. Fuhr paced the Bomber attack with 23 points, including four three-pointers. McLaren added 14 points.

The Bombers then played one if its best games of the season dumping Fernie 74-30. The Bombers jumped out to a 13-6 lead in the first quarter, but really put the game away with a 23-4 third quarter rout.

Fuhr led the scoring with 19 points. Kyndle Doolan added 14 along with 11 rebounds while Melinda Halstead had 10. Moulson also had 11 boards for LVR.

The Bombers now travel to Trail Tuesday to meet the J. Lloyd Crowe Hawks in West Kootenay High School Girl’s Basketball League play.
