No one, not even BC High School Fieldhockey board was going to deny the L.V. Rogers Bombers from competing in the BC High School Championships.

Persistence by the Bomber players, parents and coaching staff paid off as the Bombers now join J. Lloyd Crowe of Trail as the two teams from the West Kootenay zone to compete at the AA Championships.

“Despite all of the chaos surrounding the wildcard (spot) the LVR Bombers team was awarded the berth,” said coach Bruce Walgren.

“I am very proud of the team, all of the girls deserve the reward to play at the provincials,” Walgren added.

The chaos started after the Bombers lost 3-0 to the Hawks in the West Kootenay Zone Final in Trail. LVR advanced to the final by stopping Stanley Humphries of Castlegar 4-1 in semi-final action. Gioia Valk from the penalty spot, Erica Potkins, Elle Schelgel and Rylee Jordhal scored for the Bombers.

After losing in the West Kootenay final to Crowe, the Bombers decided to test the wild card route to earn a provincial spot. To advance, LVR would need to defeat the Okanagan rep.

However, Okanagan team did not want to play the second place Kootenay team therefore forfeited. But before LVR could begin celebrations, the BC High School Fieldhockey board stepped in to offer Windsor of Vancouver a chance to meet the second place Kootenay team for the wild card spot.

Windsor, also backed out, not wanting to travel to a game in Kelowna.

Still not satisfied, the BC Fieldhockey offered a Burnaby school a chance to compete for the wild card spot. Again, the Lower Mainland school did not want to travel to the interior for the game, resulting in, finally, LVR being awarded the wild card spot.

The BC High School AA Championships are November 7-9. In 2017, LVR finished 11th overall.
