The Nelson Police Department is advising of a bear sighting in the 600 block of West Gore Street in Rosemont at about 6 p.m. Tuesday evening.

This is the second notice sent out by Nelson Police in less than a month.

Police said the bear was located in front of a private residence, possibly trying to access a covered porch area.

“The bear was scared off by the homeowner and was last seen walking into a nearby wooded area,” the NPD media release said.

“Nelson Police attended the scene but were unable to locate the bear.”

Police said the bear was described to Police as a large adult black or brown bear.

NPD would like to remind Nelson residents to be vigilant of their surroundings and contact Police and BC Conservation of any similar sightings.

“Residents across the City are further reminded that we are now entering the bear season where adherence to the City of Nelson’s Waste Management and Wildlife Attractant Bylaw will greatly reduce these types of encounters with bears and other wildlife.”

Tips from WildSafe BC include:

  • Do not store garbage outdoors
  • Pick up fallen fruit
  • Remove bird feeders or at least keep the area under the feeder clean and reduce the amount of seed you put out at a time (no more than a cup at a time)
  • Do not feed pets outdoors
  • Keep the home barbecue clean
