Bassett and friends kick off Glory Ridge opening

Marley Bassett, along with a few friends, prepare to load the first Glory Ridge chair last week at Whitewater.

Marley Bassett of Nelson was joined by a few friends to officially open the Glory Ridge triple chair at the Whitewater Ski Resort.

Bassett won the raffle draw hosted by Whitewater Ski Team, the Avalanche Awareness Beyond the Boundaris, and the Nelson Food Cupboard.

Rising 2,042 vertical-feet in 11 minutes, the new Glory Ridge Chair, opened prior to Christmas, will at full build-out open 303 hectares (749 acres) of advanced and intermediate ski terrain, upping the resort’s skiable area to a formidable 533 hectares (1,317 acres).

The Glory Chair, purchased during the summer and trucked all the way north from the storied slopes of Vail, Colorado, will initially open eight new runs (five expert and three intermediate) and a sprawling, 180-degree mountain side of world-class glade and tree skiing.

Whitewater Marketing Manager Anne Pigeon, far right in picture, was on hand to conduct the ceremony.

The base at Whitewater is 167 cm or 65.7 inches.
