A size 3.5 Yoho National Park avalanche Saturday nearly claimed the lives of two Calgary backcountry skiers, Revelstoke RCMP report.

While hiking up to ski near the Emerald Lake slide path in the park Saturday, the two men crossed over the slide path to continue up the trail. That’s when the slide released and buried the two men, both in their 20’s.

Two other groups of skiers came up the track and discovered them — both men still partially visible above the snow.

They were freed and pulled off to the side. A helicopter was later dispatched to the scene. The two men suffered minor injuries.

The avalanche danger in the area was rated as considerable at the time.
