Nelson Olive Oil Co., owned and operated by Michelle Rudell and Dave Heath, offers as many as 50 of the world’s most-finest and unique oils and balsamic vinegars.
“I love people, being social and I love food . . . cooking is my favourite thing to do,” said Michelle in an interview last week.

“What you taste is what you get,” Michelle explained.
“Our mission is to provide our customers with the freshest, highest quality, authentic “FIRST CRUSH” olive oils and authentic Italian balsamic vinegars.”
Nelson Olive Oil Co., which opened for business June, imports Balsamic from Italy and Olive Oil from all over the world from small, organically practising growers and producers through one main supplier.
Olive trees are not particularly susceptible to insects so pesticide sprays are not required.
“We are about the quality and the freshness of the oils and how, and when they are harvested,” she explained. “The producers and farmers personal practices play a huge role,” Michelle adds. “Everything is NON-GMO and the refillable glass bottles use less waste.”
Olive oil is produced by crushing whole fresh olives, grown in both Hemispheres. Due to the quality, freshness and exceptional chemistry (high oleic acid content, very low Free Fatty Acid (FFA) and robust Phenol count, it can be safely heated to temperatures of 400ºF+ and doesn’t produce toxic aldehydes, common to inferior quality cooking oils. It is the most versatile oil that can be used across the spectrum of culinary applications - from frying to baking to dressing salads.
Balsamic vinegar is made from the Trebbiano and Lambrusco grapes of Italy's Emilia-Romagna region. Nelson Olive Oil Co. is proud to offer authentic balsamic that is truly artisan crafted to be identical to Traditional Extra Vecchio DOP in both flavour and chemical composition. This is accomplished by demanding the highest proportion of barrel aged, kettle-cooked grape must in their products crafted in Modena, Italy.
Their balsamics are naturally flavoured with no added sugars or colours. They are low-glycemic, probiotic and packed with antioxidants.
Michelle moved to Nelson mostly for the skiing and beautiful Kootenay Lake. Four years ago, she was introduced to the business through a family member.
The supplier only approves certain locations as to not saturate the market. Michelle and Dave were approved to open a store in Nelson.
"I'm a bit of a risk taker and a natural entrepreneur,” Michelle said. “I get that from my Dad.
"I love Nelson for the people and the lifestyle. I cannot picture living anywhere else . . .. People are so accepting and easy to connect with here."
