Over 1,483 tonnes of scrap metal were removed form the regional district last year, keeping it out of the landfill and turning it into useful products.

Last week the care and feeding of scrap metal recovery in the regional district went up for grabs as the RDCK opened the tender for the service.

The Regional District of Central board of directors voted to open the tender at their March 17 meeting, looking for companies adept at the removal of collected scrap metal at resource recovery facilities within the regional district.

The metal material salvage services will reduce the amount of waste material going to landfill.

Approximately 1,124 square metres plus 1,483 tonnes and 334 individual units of scrap metal were removed from the landfill sites in 2010.

An average of approximately 1,664 tonnes of scrap metal were removed from the sites annually in 2008 through 2010.

The contract is for the supply of all supervision, labour, materials, tools, plant, equipment and any incidentals necessary to remove scrap metal from the six sites, including Salmo, Creston, Nakusp, Ootischenia, Balfour and Kaslo landfills.

The contract will commence on May 1 and end on April 30, 2014. Proposals will be accepted until 2 p.m., Monday March 28.

The RDCK covers an area of approximately 23,000 square kilometres, including the municipalities of Castlegar, Creston, Nakusp, Nelson, New Denver, Salmo, Silverton, and Slocan.
