Wildflower School students hosts fundraiser for The White Helmets, Syrian Refugees.

A student at Wildflower School in Nelson is going over and above the call of duty.

Grade 8 student Phaedra McNeil is hosting the Stay Sweet Event Friday (June 7) at the Central School Gym at 811 Stanley Street in Nelson.

All proceeds from the event go toward The White Helmets and Syrian Refugees.

“Phaedra saw some photos of the war in Syria (and) wanted to do something as she thought it wasn’t fair that she felt safe andthe children (in Syria) didn’t,” school spokesperson.

“For a while, she made and sold cards, donating theproceeds. As a school project this year, she decided to do a fundraiser.”

The White Helmets, officially known as Syria Civil Defence, is a volunteer organization that operates in parts of rebel-controlled Syria and in Turkey.

Friday will be the culmination of months of hard work and dedication by her and some of the other middle school students.

The eventruns from 4- 6 p.m. There will be live music, a silent auction, treats and beverages, face painting, and a raffle.

The event is open to the public.
