West Kootenay Alzheimer's Society is hosting a free Dementia Education series

The West Kootenay Alzheimer’s Society is hosting a free Dementia Education series in Nelson, Castlegar and Trail in the coming weeks.

The local society is hosting three different educational sessions — Shaping the Journey; Family Caregivers and Understanding Dementia.

The Nelson course, Shaping the Journey: living with dementia™, is a program designed specifically for people experiencing the early symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease or another dementia as well as a care-partner family member or friend.

The six-week series goes:

Thursdays 1-3, starting January 31, Feb 7, 14,21,28, March 7.

The course in Trail is for Family Caregivers.

The five-week session is for family members who are caring for a person with dementia.Participants will learn about dementia, practical coping strategies, and early planning.

The Family Caregiver Series covers the following topics:

• Understanding Dementia

• Understanding Communication

• Understanding Behaviour

• Planning for the Future

• Self-Care for Caregivers’

Understanding Dementia  – one session

Participants will receive basic information about dementia and the impact this disease has on the individual, caregivers and families. Through an exploration of how dementia affects the brain and behaviour across the progression of the disease, caregivers will learn what to expect throughout the journey with dementia.
