Local artist Ian Johnston is wholeheartedly invested in the creative process.

And he is currently Oxygen Art Centre’s artist in residence.

Throughout the month, Johnston is exploring his invention for vacuum forming wet clay. The work focuses on two installations for an upcoming Canadian tour of his project: Reinventing Consumption.

On display is a seductive, large scale wall installation of block printed, vacuum formed ceramic elements configured over a 1940’s steam kettle. Opposite to this is a massive inflatable breathing environment called The Chamber.

Once inflated, the ginormous nylon bag corks the better part of the gallery, physically nudging the viewer like a passing cloud. The nylon bag then recedes like a tide. A collection of once valued objects are gradually revealed.

The viewer is transported to a time when the wheels have come off. And we are given an opportunity to identify, potentially reassess our position on the planet.

On Friday, September 28th, there will be an artist talk at 7 p.m. followed by an open studio on the 29th and 30th from 1- 5 p.m. Oxygen Art Centre is located at 3-320 Vernon Street (back alley entrance) in Nelson. For more information head to oxygenartcentre.org.

A Culture Days event, part of the Canada-wide celebration designed to raise the awareness, accessibility, participation and engagement of all Canadians in the arts and cultural life of their communities.
