A large turnout of walker joined the Nelson Chapter of the Alzheimer’s society of BC at the annual Investors Group Walk for Memories Sunday at the NDCC Arena.

Each of the Walks is dedicated to an Honoree  — a person who has been impacted by Alzheimer’s disease or other dementia.

The 2012 Nelson fundraiser honoured longtime Nelson resident George Grypma.

Grypma was born in Holland on February 2, 1926 and as a young man served his country after WWII for four years in Indonesia.

On returning from Holland, George fell in love with Anna Groot, to whom he’s been married to for 56 years.

Together they had two children before moving to Calgary to complete the family with four more.

With six children in tow, the family moved to Nelson where George and Anna established a family business called Georama: a beautiful vision of the earth.

After 20 successful years working as a family, he retired in 1990 and settled into a happy retirement of travelling with Anna.

At the age of 76, George developed Alzheimer’s disease and through it he lived with grace, dignity and humour until his passing on Aug. 9, 2012.
