A Kelowna teen has launched a sourdough fundraiser to support sending kids to summer camp.

After attending the virtual 93rd Session of the British Columbia Youth Parliament in December, Isabella Harmel decided to run a unique fundraiser, selling artisan bread in support of the organization’s signature project, Camp Phoenix.

Camp Phoenix is a sleep-away camp run by the British Columbia Youth Parliament that provides children who would not otherwise be able, the chance to attend a week long summer camp.

Camp Phoenix is run by volunteers who are members of the British Columbia Youth Parliament.

“Every child deserves a fun, educational camping experience in a supportive environment,” said Abby Head, Camp Phoenix Administrator.

“We believe BCYP’s camp project is of great benefit to communities, but this work also needs critical fundraising support.”

After announcing this fundraiser on social media, there was an outpouring of support from Isabella’s neighbors, friends and other community members, including an offer from Dan Bronswyk, owner of the Downtown Location of Bread Co, to donate all the bread required for the fundraiser.

“I’m always inspired by young people trying to make a difference in the world,” says Bronswyk.

“I thought the cause was great and that it was something we would be proud to support.”
