Sailing off into the sunset is what many of us dream of. On Thursday, March 28 at 7 p.m. the Nelson Public Library hosts a rollicking evening of tales that involve a lot more than a sunset when author and adventurer Skip Rowland describes seven years on the high seas.

An average life was never in the cards for Rowland. His granddad competed in the 1905 Trans-Atlantic race and sailing became a bloodline sport for Rowland. Rowland crewed aboard the original Ondine, a famous sailing yacht, and, as a US Marine, won the all service sailing championships.

For Rowland, the sea always beckoned: eventually he sold everything and set sail for adventures that would forever bond the skipper and his courageous mate — now wife — Denise as they explored the drop-dead beauty of the South Pacific and beyond. Rowland has owned five offshore yachts and sailed over 30,000 nm. Violent storms and pirates, star-studded skies and sapphire seas are all part of his stories.

Rowland has authored two books, dozens of magazine articles, and speaks publicly about his adventures. Joined by his wife Denise, his presentation “Outward Bound,” based on his books, is a true story of an ordinary man making the most of a life-changing, rewarding, and occasionally dangerous voyage.
