Stories aren’t only told through the written word. Photographs can also tell a story of a person, a place or community. Photographer Fred Rosenberg has been telling stories from the streets of Nelson with his camera for four decades.

Rosenberg shares his experiences in a talk, “Anecdotal Evidence: A Personal History of Candid Photography,” at the Nelson Library on Wednesday, May 25 at 7 p.m.

Through his camera lens, Rosenberg has documented people of all ages and walks of life participating in community life from parades to protests. Many of these photographs can be found in his book of Nelson photographs, Anecdotal Evidence, published in 2021 by Ceriph Press.

“Publishing Anecdotal Evidence just felt right,” says Ceriph Press owner Anne DeGrace.

“What I was delighted to discover was that Fred was not only an exceptional visual storyteller, he can also spin a fascinating tale about his process.”

Rosenberg has drawn praise for an insightful eye for subject and composition in street photography and in portraiture. In this free presentation he’ll talk about the nature and the craft of candid photography — journalistic, naturalistic, and street — and his own exploratory journey.

Rosenberg will illustrate his points with his own photographs, and with examples of work by photographers he admires.
