West Kootenay EcoSociety is celebrating our 25th anniversary this fall, and Oso Negro Coffee is helping kick off the celebrations by releasing the EcoSociety Blend this month.

Oso Negro has been a big supporter of EcoSociety since the beginning. They share EcoSociety’s values and are trying to be accountable with their operations and employment practices at the cafe and roastery.

“It’s Nelson’s good fortune to have the EcoSociety to be inspired by,” says Jon Meyer, Oso Negro’s founder and owner. “Oso Negro is trying to be accountable. Working with the EcoSociety is another way to do that.”

“With this special blend, we’re offering a smooth dark roast Guatemalan-based coffee blended with African beans,” he says. The Guatemalan coffee comes from the company Justicia. They are a group of farmers working to create social and political change in Guatemala.

The EcoSociety Blend is called a well balanced perspective, a dark roast. EcoSociety’s perspective and actions have helped protect the Kootenay wilderness and built sustainable communities for the past 25 years.

“We’ll be continuing to celebrate our anniversary later this fall with some special events. Having Oso put out a special EcoSociety blend is a great way to kick off the celebrations,” says Montana Burgess, EcoSociety’s executive director. “It’s also a very touching gesture for me personally. 26 years ago, my parents and our Kamloops-based coffee roasting company and cafe were ready to upgrade our coffee roaster to a larger model. We sold our 1Kg roaster to Oso Negro who then opened up shop in Nelson later that year. It feels like a perfect circle to now be living in the Kootenays and collaborating with Oso Negro.”

“We know people in the Kootenays love their fair trade local coffee roasters. Oso Negro is an institution. We hope people see EcoSociety as an institution after all these years as well. We’re looking at our anniversary as the start of a more resilient EcoSociety ready to take on challenges and celebrate hope for the next 25 years,” Burgess adds.

Through leadership and education, EcoSociety has focused on conservation, renewable energy, and food sustainability for a quarter century. Being part of EcoSociety means being at the forefront of local issues such as clean energy, local food, and conserving old growth forests. It means playing a part in protecting our lands and keeping our communities, our air and our water clean, safe and healthy.

West Kootenay EcoSociety is a non-profit community-driven organization that brings together local residents to protect the natural environment while building just, equitable, healthy, and livable communities in the West Kootenay region.
