Nelson United Church is hosting a free screening of “Doin’ Time in the Homo No Mo’ Halfway House: How I Survived the Ex-Gay Movement” on Saturday, March 14 at 7 p.m. in the downstairs Hall of the church building.

Quirky Queer Quaker performance artist, activist, and scholar, Peterson Toscano tells the story of his experience surviving gay conversion therapy to become a healthy gay man in this live recording of his one-man show.

Peterson Toscano’s personal journey to accept himself as gay had been long and complicated. He spent 17 years and over $30,000 on three continents attempting to change and suppress his same-sex orientation and gender differences. In January of 1999 he came to his senses and tumbled out of the closet.

Through performances, media appearances, and community organizing, he raises public awareness about the harm that comes from seeking to suppress and change one’s sexuality and gender differences. Toscano is also known for his work with the Citizen’s Climate Lobby, his ”Climate Stew” and “Bubble & Squeak” podcasts, as well as his work as a queer Biblical scholar.

This free screening of a live recording of Toscano’s stage show is part of the national United Church of Canada’s PIE Day, where local church congregations are asked to be Public, Intentional, Explicit (PIE) in celebrating and honouring the full inclusion of LGBTQ2SIA+ people in faith communities and beyond.

Refreshments will be served.
