Nelson Legion president visits 561 Nelson Osprey Air Cadet Squadron

Bill Haire, the President of the Nelson branch of the Royal Canadian Legion visited the Nelson air cadets during the squadron’s Commanding Officer’s parade recently.

 After inspecting the cadets, Haire spoke to the cadets about the role of the Royal Canadian Legion, the meaning of the Poppy, the significance of Remembrance Day and the how the branch supports the community.

Haire also thanked the cadets for their support of the Poppy Fund. The cadets were helping with the distribution of Poppies the previous Saturday. 

One of the senior cadets, Flight Sergeant Brandon Brook was presented with their Air Cadet Long Service Medal.

This medal is for cadets who have completed four years in the cadet program. Brandon joined the squadron in April of 2018. Brandon attended the General Training course at Albert Head Cadet Training Centre in 2019 and in 2021 Brandon complete the virtual Advanced Aviation Course. 

This year marks 70 years of air cadets in Nelson. As part of the 70th anniversary, the squadron is hoping to get in contact with former members of the squadron. Let us know what you have done since you were in 561 and send us any pictures that you have in your time with 561. 

The squadron always welcome new cadets who are between the ages of 12 and 18. You can start your application at https://registration.cadets.gc.ca/get-started.html?unitId=175 

The squadron meets every Wednesday evening at the Nelson Eagles Hall, 641 Baker St, from 6:15 pm to 9 pm and does activities on selected weekends throughout the year. 

Adults who would like to volunteer with the squadron are also welcome.
