The Nelson Leafs Recycling Center and the Regional District of Central Kootenay (RDCK) have agreed to continue directing profits from a Nelson transfer station beverage container donation program to the Kootenay Lake Hospital Foundation.

The Nelson Leafs Recycling Center has hosted a beverage container receptacle at the Nelson transfer station since 2010. Pop bottles, aluminum cans, and other refundable containers are collected from the receptacle and brought to the Recycling Center at 120 Silica St. for refund.

All funds generated from the program are donated to the Kootenay Lake Hospital Foundation. Program proceeds previously benefitted the hospital’s CT scanner campaign. With that campaign successfully concluded, funds will now be available to help purchase other much needed hospital equipment. The first priority will be a “Vein Viewer” with a price tag of $15,000.

The revolutionary device will reduce the time it takes to start an IV by fifty percent.

“We are so pleased to be able to continue to support the Kootenay Lake Hospital Foundation’s efforts to serve this community by using recyclable containers to support valuable equipment purchases for our local hospital,” said Beverly Dawe, manager for the Nelson Leafs Recycling Centre.

“This is a great example of two organizations working together to benefit the community,” added Uli Wolf, general manager of Environmental Services for the RDCK.

“Not only are we able to help the hospital achieve its service goals, but we are also helping to keep recyclable materials out of the landfill.”

In BC, approximately one billion beverage containers are recycled each year. Recycling saves energy, reduces greenhouse gas emissions, and relieves pressure on nonrenewable resources.
