“It’s hard to run a fundraiser during these hard times,” acknowledges Nelson Hospice Society Executive Director Jane DiGiacomo, but she continues:

“Starting in mid-summer, we here at NDHS started receiving calls for outdoor yard work support from many of our regular Work-a-thon clients, and we thought it was more important than ever to respond to this need.”

And so, they are responding to the need by running their 5th Annual Work-a-thon this Sunday, October 25.

Like everything else though, with COVID, things will look a little different.  The Work-a-thon will be held over the course of 6 hours on Sunday, but will not start with the tradition kick-off breakfast and gathering of all the Work-a-thon teams.  Instead, each team will come by the Community First Health Coop where NDHS has their offices and will pick up assignments, supplies, and a snack to keep them fuelled for the day’s work ahead.

According to the NDHS ED Ms. DiGiacomo, “probably the most important difference for us this year is that we will not be seeking sponsorships from the business community.  We want to acknowledge that so many local supporters here in Nelson are suffering financially due to COVID and instead focus on getting bodies out to the yards of those in need to do the work that needs to be done in a  safe, socially-distanced way.”

Instead, NDHS is expecting financial support from just two of their largest past sponsors and will shift focus from raising money to helping others.

DiGiacomo welcomes this shift saying, “I think we can all use a lot more connection these days and this event has always been a way for those of us in community who have the means to do outdoor work to help those who don’t.  It’s always been a really satisfying day for clients and volunteers alike and this year will be more satisfying I think.”

More volunteers are needed to make this year’s event happen so please contact Nelson Hospice at 250-352-2337 or info@nelsonhospice.org to register for Sunday’s event.
