“Climate Action for Peace” is the theme of this year’s International Day of Peace, to be held in Nelson Saturday, September 21st.

KAIROS, an interfaith group that works for environmental justice in Canada and the world, will host the event, a United Nations initiative, at 1 p.m. at the Rotary Shelter in Lakeside Park. The event is cosponsored by the Kootenay Region United Nations Association.

Speakers include Jennie Barron, chair of the Mir Centre for Peace at Selkirk College; Kate Letizia, climate change coordinator for the City of Nelson; community advocate Jan Inglis and Jade Osecki, youth activist and member of the Citizens Climate Lobby and Fridays for the Future.

Also featured will be the singing duo Fominoff Sisters, Heart Song and Dances of Universal Peace.

“The International Day of Peace provides a globally shared date for all humanity to settle our differences and to commit to building a culture of peace,” said organizer Sandra Hartline.

“Green solutions are in our hands, as we strive to build a world where we can live in harmony with the environment and with each other.

According to the United Nations, climate change causes clear threats to international peace and security. Natural disasters displace three times as many people as conflicts, forcing millions to leave their homes and seek safety elsewhere. The salinization of water and crops is endangering food security, and the impact on public health is escalating. The growing tensions over resources and mass movements of people are affecting every country on every continent.

The Nelson event will focus on education and opportunities for action.
