Applications for the 2019 June Lythgoe Scholarship are now being received.

Lythgoe was someone passionately committed to furthering opportunities for artistic excellence in Nelson. June was instrumental in creating the Amy Ferguson Institute (AFI) to further the vocal arts (both choral and solo) in the West Kootenays. Since its inception, AFI – in conjunction with Nelson Community Opera – mounted annual productions of opera and musical theatre, including two original local operas, KHAOS and Jorinda, along with many popular operas and musical theatre productions.

AFI knows that increasing educational opportunities for area youth is essential when fostering a vibrant musical community. The June Lythgoe Scholarship was established to help meet this goal. It provides a biennial $1000 scholarship to further the studies of a West Kootenay music student at a recognized post-secondary institution.

The 2016 recipient, Emma Chart, used the Scholarship to help with her studies at the Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theatre in New York city.

Deadline for submissions is April 30, 2019. To find out more or to download the application, visit www.amyfergusoninstitute.ca/awards/.
