The 18th Annual Nelson GardenFest is kicking off Nelson’s Market Season on Saturday, May 11 from 10 a.m., to 3 p.m. on the 600 block of Baker Street and 500 block of Hall Street.

This will be the second year it will take place on the newly renovated Hall Street Plaza and its public amenities. The streets will be closed on the 600 block of Baker St. from 7 a.m. until 4 p.m. on May 11th.

The West Kootenay EcoSociety will be managing the 2019 Nelson GardenFest once again this year, but the first year for newly hired Markets Coordinator Craig Mullin.

“I’m super excited to be running this event as it will be the first of many for the season and it usually has had the luck of a beautiful sunny day which is sure to bring out the big crowds and made this amazing community event just that much more wonderful,” Mullin said.

“This will be my first chance to meet the community in my new role as EcoSociety’s Market Coordinator and an opportunity to continue the great legacy of years of successful Markets in Nelson.”

Mullin is managing EcoSociety’s 2019 Markets including the Saturday Cottonwood Community Market staring May 18th, Nelson Downtown Local Market starting June 12th, and the Friday-night summer MarketFest street festivals on July 26 and August 23.

GardenFest was started by three avid local gardeners in 2002 with just a few tables set out on Hall St. It has now grown into one the annual market highlights with over 50 vendors and community groups on hand with perennials, annuals, vegetable starts, trees and flowers – just about everything a gardener needs to get started or add to an already great gardening endeavor.

There will be many of the regular vendors who are GardenFest staples as well as new vendors from across the area bringing plenty of variety to the market. GardenFest is always held on Mother’s Day weekend so if you want to get something lovely and special for mom don’t miss this market.

Gardeners can also get tips and planting information from the on-hand vendors as many of them are long time Kootenay growers and gardeners who know all about how to cultivate in this region and weather conditions.

Late-night Nelsonites are reminded to please move their parked cars from the street the Friday night to make it easier for the vendors to set-up GardenFest early on Saturday morning. Parking for the festival is available at the city parkade on Vernon Street or street parking in and around Baker St. area.
