Free transit service for Car-Free Day in Nelson

To help Nelson celebrate Car-Free Day, BC Transit service will be free all day on Thursday, Sept. 22.
“I encourage people in Nelson to take advantage of the free transit service on Car-Free Day,” said Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Blair Lekstrom. “This is a great opportunity to show people that transit is viable alternative to driving a vehicle.”
Courtesy of the City of Nelson, the free service will offer Nelson access to a sustainable transportation option for Car-Free Day and promote transit as part of building healthier, more vibrant communities.
“I would strongly encourage residents to get behind this initiative and take the bus on Thursday,” said Nelson Mayor John Dooley. “Having more people ride the buses is important-it will help make transit in our community more sustainable. If you’ve been meaning to give transit a try, this is a great opportunity.”
This is the first year that free transit service has been offered for Car-Free Day in Nelson.
“We are very pleased to be working with our partners at the City of Nelson to deliver this free BC Transit service. This service will provide everyone in Nelson with the opportunity to participate in Car-Free Day,” said Manuel Achadinha, president and CEO of BC Transit.
Funding for the Nelson Transit System is cost shared among the City of Nelson, the Regional District of Central Kootenay and BC Transit.
Decisions about fares, routes and service levels are made by the City of Nelson and the Regional District of Central Kootenay based on information and planning provided by BC Transit.
