Touchstones Nelson: Museum of Art and History has extended the deadline to apply for the third instalment of a mural residency program which kicks off this October.

‘New Echoes in the Staircase’ invites Columbia Basin LGBTQ2S+ artists into one of the building’s heritage staircases that was once used daily in earlier days but is now a liminal space no longer seen by the public.

The artist-in-residence will have access to a section of wall along the staircase to add to this conversation about behind-the-scenes work, (mis)representation of queer voice in historical buildings/ organizations, and many other important topics.

The project will include a virtual studio tour and discussion, made available to the public via video, and a site-specific mural in the staircase. It will also support the work of local LGBTQ2S+ artists through an artist-in-residency program—connecting professional artists with the community at large in a unique environment. Videos of the past two muralists and their work can be found on the Touchstones Nelson Vimeo page.

“We will be able to increase our audience by developing a new exhibition space within a formally hidden heritage stairwell and ensure that all people feel invite and welcomed into the museum” says Executive Director Astrid Heyerdahl.

The mural launch will coincide with the closing party of the two current exhibitions, JJ Levine’s Alone Time/Queer Portraits and Kootenay Pride: We Love a Parade! in mid-November.

The mural will also be incorporated in school programming developed to encapsulate the exhibitions and shared with our local school district through school tours.

Touchstones Nelson Museum will be following the Work Safe BC guidelines for safe working environments as well as Interior Health COVID-19 health and safety protocols for the artist, staff, and volunteers. Artists will be financially compensated and all supplies will be provided. To apply, please send a proposal, 5-10 portfolio images, and artist statement or a curator statement, biography and current CV to programs@touchstonesnelson.ca.

The new deadline to apply is Thursday, October 14, 2021, with painting commencing as early as Tuesday, October 19. Full submission guidelines can be found at touchstonesnelson.ca/submissions.
