Nelson CARES Society is encouraging Nelson and area residents to bundle up and raise cold, hard cash for this year’s Coldest Night of the Year fundraising event.

A family-friendly winter fundraising walk for Nelson’s homeless, hungry and hurting, this year’s “virtual” walk takes place on Saturday, February 26th, 2022.

This year’s virtual WALK will look similar to the one last year: Nelson and area participants will be taking to the streets, walking solo, or with their families, bubbles, and teams throughout our community, but in spirit, they’ll be walking in solidarity with the thousands of other participants in an anticipated 170 cities across Canada.

Despite how challenging these past years have been for many, the response to this event has been overwhelming. Nelsonites continually prove their generosity during this crisis.

By walking “together” in the chill of the night, participants will better understand the experience of being on the streets during a cold Canadian winter, while raising funds to support the Ready for Home program that operates out of Ward Street Place. This program is one-on-one support for these residents to maintain their housing and thrive.

“I am continually overwhelmed and humbled with the response from the community to support the most vulnerable among us and this year is no different with early CNOY numbers looking as ‘off the chart’ as they were last year,” said Stephanie Myers, the Coldest Night of the Year Coordinator.

“I want everyone to know how much this means to the staff, board, and volunteers of Nelson CARES as well as those served by their programs.”

The Nelson Coldest Night of the Year  WALK will see participants walking outdoors on a self-designed route of 2km or 5km. Those who raise over $150 (or $75 for youth) will also don iconic toques as they face the cold night.

Nelson CARES would like to invite everyone to spend some time on the streets on Saturday, Feb 26th and consider the challenges faced by those who spend years there. This is Nelson CARES Society’s 8th year taking part in the Coldest Night of the Year]. An expected 240 walkers and 50 teams are expected to brave the cold winter’s night.

Nelson CARES Society wishes to thank its 2022 sponsors. Returning for a fourth year as Lead Sponsor is Valhalla Pure Nelson, and joining them in this role for the second year is the Nelson Home Building Centre.
