What is fun, free, and helps Kootenay children and youth build skills for their future success . . . a visit from the Code Mobile.

The Code Mobile is rolling into Nelson and partnering with the Nelson Public Library to offer a free Tech Fair on Saturday, October 20 from 3:30-5:30 p.m.

The drop-in program will give children and their families the opportunity to explore different activity stations and get hands-on experience with technology.

Participants can program robots to navigate a maze or play a song, learn about HTML and CSS by remixing code on a website, use everyday objects to control computer games, and grasp computational thinking concepts through unplugged activities that engage the imagination.

The event is suitable for ages five and up, and requires no prior knowledge or technical ability.

“We’re thrilled to be hosting the Code Mobile” says Tracey Therrien, Chief Librarian at the Nelson Public Library. “Events like these help support the efforts of agencies across the Kootenays in promoting the importance of technology education in an interactive and fun atmosphere.”

Canada Learning Code is a leading learn-to-code charity that believes digital skills are tools of empowerment. Their Code Mobiles are travelling all across Canada, bringing technology education to communities large and small. Funded by the Government of Canada’s CanCode program, the fleet’s goal is to empower Canadian youth to learn skills to create and invent using technology. Canada Learning Code also has local chapters in communities large and small from coast to coast, including in Nelson. Learn more here: https://www.canadalearningcode.ca/chapters/nelson/

The Kelowna-based Code Mobile will be making its first visit to the Kootenays and in addition to the public event at the library, will be teaching workshops at schools and community groups in the region.

Schools, community groups and festivals can request a future visit from the Code Mobile at CodeMobile.ca.
