Book launch, local history talk at Nelson Library

L.V. Rogers is well-known to locals as the name of the high school, but the story of the man behind the name may not be as familiar.
Historians, Patricia and Robert Malcolmson shed some light on this local historical figure with a presentation and launch of their new booklet, L.V. Rogers: The Man Behind the Name at the Nelson Library on May 31 at 7 p.m.
L.V. Rogers: The Man Behind the Name tells the story of Rogers’ life, from his birth to an unwed teenager in England, his passage across the Atlantic on his own as a five-year-old, and life with a farm family in Eastern Ontario. Rogers’ went on to graduate from Queen’s University, teach in British Columbia, run for elected office, and serve as the principal of Nelson’s high school for almost 25 years.
Rogers’ was widely admired, loved by his students, respected by other teachers, and praised by school inspectors.
Robert says, “Our goal for the evening is not only to recount his exceptional life but also to provide readers with a glimpse into the process of historical discovery. We hope to inspire a deeper appreciation for local history and the individuals who have shaped our communities”.
Patricia and Robert Malcolmson are social historians and have authored and edited over twenty books, most of which focus on English society since 1700. Their recent works include editions of diaries written during the Second World War, including The View from the Corner Shop and A Nurse’s War.
Currently, they are working on a social history of the South Okanagan between about 1920 and 1950.
