Beverage container recycling pays off big for KLH Foundation

Citizens concerned about the environment turned refundable beverage containers into a $7,000 donation to the Kootenay Lake Hospital (KLH) Foundation during a ceremony Tuesday at the Nelson Leafs Recycling Centre.
In a joint effort, the Regional District of Central Kootenay and the Nelson Leafs Hockey Club the donation came from beverage containers collected at the Nelson Transfer Station.
“We are pleased to continue to support the Kootenay Lake Hospital Foundation’s efforts to serve this community,” Ramona Faust Director for Elector Area E said in a statement.
“Refundable containers are helping to fund the purchase of valuable hospital equipment, thanks to all the people who are contributing to this worthy cause.”
The RDCK and the Nelson Leafs Recycling Center have hosted a beverage container-recycling program at the Nelson transfer station since 2010.
Recycling bins provide residents with a convenient place to recycle refundable beverage containers.
“This partnership is a cooperative effort and allows both organizations to provide a worthwhile service with a meaningful benefit to the community.” stated Uli Wolf, General Manager of Environmental Services for the RDCK.
“Not only are we contributing to improving the services of our local hospital, but we are also helping to keep recyclable materials out of the landfill.”
The $7,000 donation represents the 2012 profits.
In total the program has contributed over $20,000 in three years to KLH foundation fundraising efforts.
All refundable beverage containers and milk containers (non-refundable) are accepted in the bins at the Transfer Station.
Sorting is not required.
Residents must place individual containers into the bins.
However, no bulk loads are accepted.
Large volumes of containers are accepted at the Recycling Centre (Bottle Depot) located at 120 Silica Street.
In BC, approximately one billion beverage containers are recycled each year. Recycling saves energy, reduces greenhouse gas emissions, and relieves pressure on non-renewable resources.
