Kootenay Lake was the recent scene of an attack as pirates Lilly and Liam Jones boarded the MV Osprey 2000 a few weeks ago looking for booty. The “Be a Pirate Captain” trip was donated by Western Pacific Marine as a children’s draw prize at Balfour Days last July.

The pirates toured the vessel, looking for treasure and treats, then stormed the bridge where they seized control of the ship from Captain “Jolly Roger” Aubert, Bridge Watch Deck Hand Sharon Zeeman and Deck Hand Cindy Moroz. They watched the crew steering the ship, observed the instrument panel and sounded the fog horn. They toured the engine room and tried on life jackets and fire-fighting gear and then retreated to the lounge to enjoy their plunder of treats.

The best part of the day was that Dustin Jones got to bring his kids to work:  “I wasn’t that keen to begin with, coming in on my day of . . . but this was so much fun!”

The Balfour Daze Committee thanks everyone involved.  Enter your child’s name to be a Pirate Captain for a Day at next year’s Balfour Daze, July 6, 2019 at the Balfour Community playing fields, where we will be celebrating “130 Years of Community”.

Sponsored by the Balfour & District Business & Historic Association and the Balfour Recreation Commission.
