Author and publisher Howard White comes to Nelson in September to offer two special events.

On Wednesday, September 18 at 7:30 p.m. at Oxygen Art Centre, White offers “From the Horse’s Mouth: Answers to All Your Questions About Getting Published in the Digital Age.”

White reads from his new poetry collection A Mysterious Humming Noise, published by Anvil Press, on Thursday, September 19 at 7pm at the Nelson Public Library.

“As both an author and a publisher, Howard White is a force to be reckoned with,” says Nelson Public Library Adult Services Coordinator Anne DeGrace. “The Library is pleased to partner with Oxygen Art Centre on this initiative.”

Howard White started Harbour Publishing in the early 1970s; since then, Harbour has published more than 500 titles of fiction, nonfiction, and poetry including the works of authors Patrick Lane, Arthur Black, and Anne Cameron. In 2013, Howard and his wife Mary purchased Douglas & McIntyre Ltd.

“Even for experienced authors, getting a book published can be a frustrating and often defeating experience,” says White. “Established book publishers get hundreds of manuscripts and only publish a handful. How do you improve your chances of being among the chosen few?” The workshop at Oxygen Art Centre, which is by donation, offers answers to these questions and many more.

As an author, White’s books include The Men There Were Then, The Sunshine Coast, Patrick and the Backhoe and more. His volume of selected works, Writing in the Rain, won the Stephen Leacock Medal for Humour. He has also been awarded the Order of BC and the Order of Canada. His previous book of poetry, Ghost in the Gears, was a finalist for the Dorothy Livesay Poetry Prize.

In A Mysterious Humming Noise White tackles, with wry humour, a range of subjects considered from his Pender Harbour vantage point. According to the Vancouver Sun, “His work is as refreshing, as spirited and melodious as a vibrant April shower. White’s style is always crisp, fresh and ebullient.” Said the Calgary Herald, “White is a pure delight to read.” Howard White’s reading at the Nelson Library promises to be both insightful and entertaining.

“This is an excellent opportunity to see the two sides of the literary coin: the creative side and the business side,” says DeGrace. “I hope folks will take advantage and come to both.”
