Selkirk College is amped to be once again sharing live music with the community when it welcomes The Slocan Ramblers on March 22 for the first full concert at the Shambhala Music & Performance Hall in more than two years.

After the necessary two-year pandemic pause, instructors in the Contemporary Music & Technology Program have invited the Toronto-based bluegrass group to spend a day at Nelson’s Tenth Street Campus with students in workshops and an evening concert that is open to the general public.

“As the situation started to ease up, I reached out to the Ramblers and asked if they thought we could swing doing a concert for the community and a workshop for our students… they said yes, let’s go for it!” says Instructor Laura Landsberg, who has been mentoring music program students on the Tenth Street Campus since 2004.

“The Slocan Ramblers are a world-class bluegrass group with loads of experience and knowledge to share with our students. They always put on a fabulous show, so it’s a win-win for our students and faculty, as well as our community.”

A Juno Award nominee, The Slocan Ramblers are rooted in bluegrass tradition with a bold, dynamic sound.

Though based in Ontario, the band takes their name from the Slocan Valley which helps their sound channel the picturesque, natural landscape character of the region. With a reputation for energetic live shows and impeccable musicianship, the Ramblers showcase their unique blend of bluegrass, old-time and folk with “deep song-writing, lightning-fast instrumentals and sawdust-thick vocals.”

Tickets for The Slocan Ramblers show are $25 and can be purchased at Notably bookstore in Nelson’s downtown.

Doors open at 7 p.m. and attendees must show proof of COVID-19 vaccination with photo ID.
