Nelson Police said that no one was injured following a car fire last month at the Mountain Lakes Seniors Centre — one of 154 calls for service in the city during the period of July 28th, 2024, at 6 a.m. to August 3rd, 2024, at 6 a.m.

Nelson Police responded to the report of a fire on Monday July 29, at 10:30 a.m.

Nelson Police said that the vehicle had been sitting unused for more than a month and its owner, one of the residents of the complex, wanted to see if it would still run.

“When he started it, his foot became lodged on the pedal, on the vehicle ran continuously for 15 minutes before staff were able to free him,” Nelson Police said. “When officers arrived, the hood of the vehicle was ablaze with thick black smoke billowing from underneath.”

Nelson Fire Department was quick on scene to extinguish the blaze before it spread.

Nelson Police said that no major injuries were caused.

Arson investigation continues

Nelson police are continuing to work diligently to investigate the string of arsons that occurred on Wednesday July 24. This week, officers have been canvassing the locations of the fires to find CCTV video and witnesses to the events.

The accused remains in custody and will next appear in court on August 7, 2024. The NPD is grateful to members of the public who have aided in our
investigation.

This is a serious crime, especially in light of the wildfires we are witnessing near neighbouring communities, and the evidence submitted by members of the public has been invaluable.

Elderly man located, returned to family

On Wednesday July 31, Nelson Police received a call to assist with an elderly male who had gotten lost.

The subject of the call suffers from dementia and had recently moved into a new home.

“After going out for food, he couldn’t remember how to get back,” Nelson Police said.

“Constables were able to help him get home and get in touch with his family members, who said they would be coming to assist him.”
