No injuries reported at Tenth Street Campus kitchen fire
Nelson Fire & Rescue Services said there were no injuries following a late night kitchen fire Wednesday at Selkirk College’s Tenth Street Residences.
Nelson Fire & Rescue Services said at 10:44 p.m., crews were dispatched to a report of a kitchen fire at College Residence building.
Nelson Fire & Rescue Services said two on duty members responded immediately with seven additional members responding from home.
“Upon arrival, the first crew found a fire that had extended from a 4 burner stove top up to the microwave and wall hung cabinets,” the Nelson Fire & Rescue Services said media release said.
“The fire had been partly extinguished by another building resident with a dry chemical extinguisher.”
Nelson Fire & Rescue Services said the first arriving crew isolated the power to the stove and completed extinguishment.
“The fire was not suspicious and occurred in a 4 room occupancy with a common kitchen,” Nelson Fire & Rescue Services said.
“Selkirk College staff attended to look after housing the 4 displaced occupants.”
Nelson Fire & Rescue Services said all other students were able to return to their residences and there were no injuries that resulted from this incident.
Nelson Fire & Rescue Services would like to take this opportunity to remind everyone to ensure that they have a working smoke alarm and remain present and attentive while cooking.
