Nelson Fire and Rescue Services respond to fire at business in mini mall

Nelson Fire and Rescue Services continue to investigate a Saturday morning structure fire to a local business at the mini mall on Front Street.
Nelson Fire and Rescue Services said in a media release that crews were dispatched to the 600 block of Front Street, near the intersection of Hall and Front Streets, at 8:13 a.m. to a report of a structure fire.
When on-duty fire crews attended, they found heavy smoke flowing from the rear of the building.
It was immediately determined by on-duty crews to call in additional 19 Nelson Fire and Rescue Services members to assist with the fighting of the fire.
“After establishing a water source at a nearby hydrant, the first arriving crew’s primary objective was to pressurize the adjacent businesses to prevent fire spread along the length of the single-story mini mall,” Nelson Fire and Rescue Services said,
“The interior attack crew was successful in containing fire spread to the business of origin and stopping the spread of fire.”
Nelson Fire and Rescue Services were assisted by RCMP, Nelson Police and City of Nelson Bylaw Officers, who quickly maintained the perimeter to control traffic in the busy business district and assist in evacuating adjacent businesses.
BC Ambulance members also provided standby assistance but there were no injuries associated with this fire.
Nelson Hydro attended the scene to disconnect power for safety reasons.
Nelson Fire and Rescue Services said crews completed work at the scene by 11:30 am.
“A fire investigation to determine the cause is currently underway,” Nelson Fire and Rescue Services said.
Nelson Fire and Rescue Services said a total of 21 firefighters responded to the incident with two fire engines, one ladder truck, one command truck and one utility vehicle.
