Nelson Fire and Rescue Services is letting the public know that Fuel Modification and debris burning will commence in the Mountain Station area starting Monday, November 14, 2022.

In a recent media release, Nelson Fire and Rescue Services said that a local contract company will be cutting dead and dying understory trees, pruning retained trees and pile burning for the Mountain Station Fuel Management Project.

The project will continue until the end of December 2022.

“(T)his important work not only decreases the wildfire risk for the adjacent neighbourhoods, but it also increases the wildfire resiliency of the City’s critical infrastructure (the Mount Station Reservoir), said Nelson’s Fire Chief Jeff Hebert in a prepared statement.

“ We are excited to see this fuel reduction project get started and build on the overall community protection efforts”.

Chief Hebert went on to explain how this work ties in the recent fuel mitigation efforts along the Rail trail as well.

This 6.2 hectare project is on City of Nelson municipal land and is provincially funded by the Community Resiliency Investment Program.

This work is part of the broader community wildfire risk reduction program undertaken by the City of Nelson and other project partners.
