The Nelson Electric Tramway Society is reaching out to the public for support in raising $80,000 to deal with track issues at the Chahko Mika Mall parking lot.

In a media release, the Nelson Electric Tramway Society a stability subgrade assessment needs to occur as soon as possible so the historic Nelson Electric Tramway, also referred to as the Streetcar, can operate and open in May 2022 for locals and visitors.

“$80,000 is required for this assessment,” NETS said.

“Funds are being collected through community donations, and pending grants, that we hope materialize.”

“Additional organizations and the City of Nelson are helping where they can, but we need (public) help too.”

NETS said tracks in the Chahko Mika Mall parking lot are starting to gradually separate, moving wider apart, which could potentially result in a derailment of the Streetcar.

NETS said the ties (wooden timbers) are buried under the concrete and to complete the assessment, approximately 50-70 feet of track, extending two feet on each side of the track, needs to be excavated and assessed.

“Timing is crucial to have the Streetcar ready to operate in May,” NETS said.

The Streetcar is a tourism attraction as well as part of the heritage of Nelson, that first operated in 1899.

The Society enters its 30th year of operation and the Streetcar, 116 years old this year, needs constant attention to ensure it runs safely.

“The constant upkeep also requires funds,” NETS said.

“Please support this needed fundraising initiative to ensure the Streetcar, part of Nelsons’ character and heritage, is preserved, and accessible for years to come.”
