Tens of thousands of people, including a rally in Nelson, took to the streets over the weekend throughout Canada to protest Russia’s war in Ukraine.

Saturday, between 50-60 people, gathered on the sidewalk in front of Nelson City Hall to show support for the eastern European people by waving signs and flags of Ukraine.

The rally, organized by Olga Hallborg of Castlegar, who has been spearheading similar events in Castlegar and last week in Nelson, came on the heels of a motion by Nelson City Council to make a small donation to a registered mainstream organization to help with aid relief in Ukraine.

Nelson Mayor John Dooley and other members of city council attended Saturday’s rally to show their support in person.

Other rallies were held in Toronto, Ottawa and Winnipeg.

Canada is home to 1.3 million people of Ukraine descent, which is the third-largest Ukrainian community outside Russia and Ukraine.
