Nelson dental business suffers extensive damage following early morning fire

A Nelson business suffered extensive damage estimated in the thousands of dollars following a Monday morning fire in the mini mall located at 600 block of Front Street Nelson Fire and Rescue Services said in a media release.

Nelson Fire and Rescue Services said the fire, with visible flames in the front office area of the dental business at 632 Front Street, was first reported at 1:20 a.m.

“The first arriving crew’s primary objective was to knock the flames down and prevent the fire from spreading to adjacent businesses,” Nelson Fire and Rescue Services said, adding additional members responded to the call from home.

“The fire was extinguished shortly after 1:30 a.m.”

Nelson Fire and Rescue Services said crews spent the next several hours ensuring no further fire spread and began a fire investigation.

“The fire appears to have originated in the front office area of the business at 632 Front Street and was contained the to this area,” Nelson Fire and Rescue Services said.

“Unfortunately, the business suffered heavy smoke, heat and fire damage.”

Nelson Fire and Rescue Services said a total of 15 firefighters responded to the incident with two fire engines, and two utility vehicles. 

Additional assistance was provided by two members from Nelson Police and one member from Nelson Hydro.

“Thankfully no injuries were reported as a result of this incident,” Nelson Fire and Rescue Services said.

Nelson Fire and Rescue Services said damage to the business is estimated at $100,000 with cause of the fire still under investigation.

Nelson Fire and Rescue Services would like to take this opportunity to remind everyone to ensure there is family evacuation plan in place and remember to test smoke alarms monthly.
