UPDATED: Environment Canada issues for Snowfall Warning for Highway 3 — Paulson Summit to Kootenay Pass

Environment Canada upgraded its Weather Alert to a Snowfall Warning Sunday for the West Kootenay region, including Kootenay Lake.

A Weather Alert remains for Boundary region, including Highway 3 — Paulson Summit to Kootenay Pass — that could see upwards of 60 cm hit the pavement.

“A weather system will bring an extended period of heavy snow the (West Kootenay) region starting this afternoon and continuing until Monday night,” Environment Canada said on its website.

“Total snowfall amounts near 20 to 25 cm are expected before the heavy snow eases on Monday evening.”

Snow accumulations between 20-25 cm are expected from Sunday afternoon through to Monday night.

Environment Canada said signifcant amounts of snow is expected for the Paulson Summit to Kootenay Pass, with upwards of 40 to 60 cm forecasted for Sunday afternoon to Monday evening.

The alert is for Highway 3, Princeton to Allison Pass.

“Rapidly accumulating snow will make travel difficultt with road closures are possible,” Environment Canada said.

Drivers should be prepared to adjust habits with changing road conditions this weekend as surfaces may become difficult to navigate due to accumulating snow.

Weather in the mountains can change suddenly resulting in hazardous driving conditions.

Public Safety Canada encourages everyone to make an emergency plan and get an emergency kit with drinking water, food, medicine, a first-aid kit and a flashlight. For information on emergency plans and kits go to http://www.getprepared.gc.ca.

Winter Weather Alert for Highway 3 — Paulson Summit to Kootenay Pass

Environment Canada has issued a Winter Weather Alert Friday for Highway 3 — Paulson Summit to Kootenay Pass — saying a significant snowfall is expected beginning Saturday before ending Monday morning.

“A winter storm moving across B.C. will begin to spread snow to the highways over southern B.C. beginning Saturday afternoon,” Environment Canada statement said.

“The snow will continue into Sunday and begin to ease off early Monday morning.”

Highways in BC expecting to see a significant amount of snow accumulation include:

  • Highway 3 – Paulson Summit to Kootenay Pass
  • Coquihalla Highway – Hope to Merritt
  • Highway 3 – Hope to Princeton via Allison Pass
  • Trans-Canada Highway – Eagle Pass to Rogers Pass

Environment Canada said storm has the potential of seeing snowfall accumulation of 15 to 30 cm.

Drivers should be prepared to adjust habits with changing road conditions this weekend as surfaces may become difficult to navigate due to accumulating snow.
