Nelson gathering showcases National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

A crowd of approximately 100 people met at Lakeside Park to participate in an informal gathering hosted by West Kootenay Metis on National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

The event, to showcase the day along with First Nations and Inuit allies, was held to engage and educate the public about those children taken from their homes and placed in residential schools around Canada and show there is a presence withing the greater community and Nelson area.

These children, placed into residential schools, were forced to disconnect from their families and culture and assimilate into Canadian Society

The people attending heard speeches, information about Orange Shirt Day and a prayer before some marched along the waterfront from Lakeside Park to Nelson City Hall.

The march traveled along the Nelson waterfront to Front Street before concluding at City Hall.
