SHARE Housing complex nears completion

A new affordable housing complex in Nelson is now accepting rental applications.

The SHARE Housing complex is nearing completion, and will offer 39 low-cost workforce housing units. The doors for each unit will open as early as September 1, 2021.

The SHARE Housing complex is a partnership between the Kootenay Christian Fellowship, SHARE Housing Initiative Society, BC Housing, and Columbia Basin Trust.

Founding Director and Chairperson of SHARE Housing Board Jim Reimer is excited to see his passion and dream come to fruition.

“In dealing with social issues, it is not enough to say to people “get a job, or do better in life;” they need secure housing, proper education, and a loving and supportive network in their lives,” said Reimer.

“We are delighted that we can participate in helping to bring these essentials to folks in our community

SHARE Housing Initiative is pleased to work with local companies and to use local resources to build the community housing complex.

SHARE Housing Initiative is grateful for unwavering support from: the City of Nelson, Cover Architectural Collaborative Inc., Innovative Housing Consultants, S.H.A.R.E. Nelson, and a host of local consultants and trades. Chandos Construction is serving as our general contractor.

“Wherever possible, we have used Kootenay products and companies for this project,” Reimer said. 

“For example, one of the great features of the building are the beams and panels for the complex that come from Kalesnikoff’s new mass timber facility.”

Ken Kalesnikoff, president and CEO of Kalesnikoff, said there is an obvious need for projects like this in our community.

“Ee are thrilled to be involved,” Kalesnikoff said.

“We commend the Kootenay Christian Fellowship for their vision, their leadership, and their efforts to bring this housing complex to life.”

The doors for each unit may open as early as September 1, 2021.

To apply for a rental unit, residents must meet the following criteria:

  • Single or couples without children
  • Household income (combined income for couples) must not exceed the BC Housing Maximum Income ($74,150 in 2019 values)
  • Employed or self-employed
  • Employment Income must exceed $15,000 per year. Seasonal and part-time work is acceptable, providing it meets the minimum standard.
  • Canadian citizen or permanent resident
  • Must be age of majority (19 years of age or older)
  • Ability to live independently
  • Household net assets less than $200,000

Other consideration will be given regarding the following:

  • Length and quality of work experience
  • Roots in Nelson and the Kootenays
  • Credit checks\reference checks
  • Community involvement\volunteering
  • A proven need
