West Kootenay/Boundary welcomes first baby of 2021 on New Year's Day

Interior Health said in an emailed statement that the West Kootenay welcomed the first baby of 2021 at 2:23 p.m. on New Year’s Day at Kootenay Lake Hospital.

Poppy Lux Postnikoff was born to the proud parents of  Amanda and Jake Postnikoff of Castlegar Friday afternoon.

Poppy Lux weighed six pounds and is sister to siblings Cooper, Mady, Emmi, Lola, Harper, Grace and Noa.    

The first baby in Interior Health region arrived at 1:22 a.m. New Year’s Day at Kelowna General Hospital.

Proud parents to the eight pounds, 10 ounce newborn baby, which has not yet been named, are Ashley and Tyler Robinson.

The Robinson baby has a two-year-old sister Emma.

The first baby of the New Year at Kootenay Boundary Regional Hospital in Trail arrived at 11:10 p.m. on January 2.

Parents of the eight pound, one ounce boy are Patricia Nadeau and Jerome Brule of Castlegar.

The boy has a three-year-old, older brother Samuel.

The first baby born in BC arrived at 12:21 a.m. at BC Women’s Hospital in Vancouver.

Olivia tops baby name race for 2020

The BC Government recently announced the top baby name in the province for 2020 is once again Olivia.

Olivia is followed by Liam, Oliver, Noah, Lucas, Emma, Theodore, Benjamin, Ethan and Charlotte, according to the Vital Statistics Agency’s preliminary figures from Jan. 1 to Dec. 17, 2020.

In 2019, Olivia was the top choice for babies born in B.C., followed by Oliver, Liam, Lucas, Ethan, Noah, William, Benjamin, Charlotte and Theodore. For eight of the past nine years, Olivia has been among the favourite names for babies born in British Columbia.

Only names that occur five or more times are listed.

From Jan. 1 to Dec. 17, 2020, 39,322 babies were born in B.C.

In 2019, 43,703 babies were born in B.C.
