Nelson’s Covenant Church Gift of Giving
When the pastor of Nelson’s Covenant Church, Jeff Strong, read a report in early September that the costs associated with going Back to School are now comparable to the amount of dollars spent at Christmas time, he saw an opportunity to serve his community and to give back.
A Kootenay Lake School District’s initiative to offer $40 school supply packs for students, further compelled him to invite his congregation to help cover the costs of school supplies for any families in the community that might be struggling with these types of back to school fees.
The support that came back from his church’s congregation was both overwhelming and unexpected. What began with a matching incentive from the church, verbal commitments and donations from individuals grew to a total of $10,800.
“This has been really heartening to witness and a huge highlight for the Nelson Covenant church.” exclaims Strong, “To know that we are doing something for our community, this act of giving encourages everyone to be a good neighbor to those in need.”
The following schools will each receive $1200 each from this generous donation, intended to be used to lower or cover school event costs, and providing financial aid for students from families who could use the support in order to participate in these events: Blewett Elementary, Brent Kennedy Elementary, Hume Elementary, Redfish Elementary, Rosemont Elementary, Salmo Elementary, South Nelson Elementary, Trafalgar School and Wildflower School (Nelson).
“We see the different pressures and economic demands on our families” expressed Superintendent Dr. Christine Perkins, “and the generosity of this large donation is whole-heartedly appreciated.”
