There’s going to be a new landlord for the Nelson Parkade.

Following decades of service, Jim Reimer is handing of the keys to the facility at 420 Vernon Street to staff at the Nelson and District Youth Centre the City of Nelson said in a media release.

“The City has been incredibly pleased with how the parkade has been operated over the past 22 years,” said Colin McClure, Chief Financial Officer for the City of Nelson. “Jim has been integral in the successful operation of the parkade, including increasing patron use. The City thanks him for his commitment to this facility over the years.”

City staff made the decision to shift operations to an internally with Reimer’s contract ending in December.

The release said the Youth Centre currently manages the City Campground and provides a number of youth in our community employment. This social enterprise employment model has been very successful and will be applied to the operation of the parkade as well. The Youth Centre will employ local youth at the parkade and provide the same level of service that currently exists.

“I want to thank the community for their ongoing support over the years. We have made many friends during our tenure, which we will always cherish,” Reimer said. “It really has been a pleasure to serve the community, and I wish continued success to Jordan Martin and her team as they take on the management of this great community resource.”

The City of Nelson would like the public to know that it is business as usual at the parkade, and that all current user contracts will be honoured to the end contract date. Day-to-day operations will remain the same going forward, with an emphasis on excellence in customer service and safety.
